Antinomy Spider Robinson 9780440102359 Books Reviews

I have a copy of this little gem, with a signature by the author in his typical humor "Yaws - a Danish Shark Movie". There are stories in here that will affect you strongly, possibly for the rest of your life.
This is the only book to be remaindered before it got on the shelves. The story is in Melancholy Elephants, which is this book with some extra stories, so if you can't fnd this one. grab Elephants. A truly mind altering experience from word one. By the way, my two copies are packed in nitrogen and safe, so there will always exist a copy for the LOC. A better book of Spider's doesn't exist.
I spent ten years looking for my copy - if you get one of your own, treasure it! The stories within are excellent and can truly touch lives and change hearts. Spider teaches us there's hope in the world.
My copy of this collection of short stories is a rarity. For reasons I no longer recall (but which I believe Robinson explained in another one of his books), Antinomy was on bookshelves for about a nanosecond before the book was remaindered. I was lucky enough to buy it as soon as it came out, back in 1980. A few things brought the book back to mind, recently, so I dug my copy off the bookshelf and re-read the stories. Yup This is just as good as I remembered. If you can find a used copy, I do recommend you grab it.

Like any collection of science fiction short stories, you're bound to like some of the fiction more than others. Although he was best known for his (funny SF) Callahan's Crosstime Saloon stories, back then, and Stardance, these stories are, in his words, "11 stories that I am proud of and I hope you enjoy." These include Antinomy; Half an Oaf; Too Soon We Grow Old; When No Man Pursueth; Nobody Likes to Be Lonely; Satan's Children; Apogee; No Renewal; Overdose; Tin Ear; The Magnificent Conspiracy. Some of the stories are funny; a few are thoughtful; all are well written.

Some of the stories have been reprinted elsewhere, but one of the things that makes this collection special are Robinson's own notes and commentary, mostly following the stories, ranging from a "where I got the idea" to what I could only call a blog entry about "silly weapons through history" to observations about the craft of writing (such as "It is never safe to assume that the opinions of the protagonist are those of the author, even if the the protagonist is made to seem like a reasonably nice person. (This classic error runs through virtually all the Heinlein criticism I've ever seen.)").

Two things got me out of my chair to grab this book off the shelf, though. One of them was listening to Peter Paul & Mary's "The Great Mandala," which figures in the last story in the book, "The Magnificent Conspiracy." The other was my effort to remember something truly wise that Robinson included in the "tidbit" accompanying that story -- which he wrote ever so much better than I could "It took me better than a quarter century to learn, the hard way, that hard work at something you want to be doing is the most fun that you can have out of bed (and that working at something you don't want to be doing is a logical impossibility--that we are all self-employed). To learn that the dummies are the ones who think it is possible to cheat the boss or the customers without cheating themselves; to learn that the smart man finds ways to make everything he does be work; to learn that 'leisure time' is truly pleasurable (indeed tolerable) only to the extent that is subconscious grazing for information with which to infuse newer, better work." Fortunately, I soaked in that particular viewpoint early (or rather it agreed with and underscored my own), which is why I've managed to make a career doing what I truly _love_ to do. "Work" is not a four-letter word for me at all.

I used to love everything Spider Robinson wrote, and buy anything with his name on it. Over the years, I got out of that habit. But if you want to read 11 stories that he was proud of -- for good reason -- this collection is worth seeking out.
Spider Robinson always comes thru.
